Shipping Container Homes Growing Popularity in Indianapolis
Custom Container Builders has unveiled their concept model for the 2023 Indianapolis Home Show’s Centerpiece Home – a pioneering shipping container home that will make history as the first of its kind in over 101 years.
Shipping container homes are an innovative type of single- or multi-family residences constructed with robust and corrosion-resistant corten steel containers, which were originally designed to hold cargo during transoceanic trips. These durable structures have become increasingly popular due to their strength, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Custom Container Builders has joined forces with JMT Landscape Group to craft an up-close experience for Home Show attendees, providing a tangible look into the expanding building trend that is quickly becoming popular across the state.
Discover the wonder of home improvement from January 20th to 29th, at the 2023 Indianapolis Home Show! With tickets costing just $15 for adults, and only $3 for children between 6-12 years old; it’s even free admission for kids 5 and under.
Indianapolis Shipping Container Hotel
Robin Staten-Lanier, a budding hotelier and the owner of Tiny Urban Escapes, recently revealed her ambitious plan to build a boutique hotel in Indianapolis’ Haughville neighborhood made entirely from shipping containers. This hidden micro resort is set for completion this summer and will offer four semi-glass private luxury suites as well as an event space perfect for any occasion!
The hotel will be located at 2214 W. Michigan St. near the Indianapolis Public Library Haughville branch. Tiny Urban Escapes is a Black-owned, female-led enterprise. Construction is planned to be completed during the summer months. Twenty-foot shipping containers are being modified into suites, while an even larger 40-foot container will house “The Scene,” an event space. In addition, each suite offers access to wellness and culinary experiences as well as on-demand concierge services.
Constructing custom modular buildings using reclaimed shipping containers has been in vogue for quite some time now. Not only are these containers cost-effective and sturdy, but they also boast excellent eco-friendliness. Thanks to this project, construction timelines have been drastically shortened and it is now more achievable for products to reach the market faster. At an estimated cost of around half a million dollars, this endeavor has received funding from LISC – a nonprofit that works towards aiding community development organizations in revitalizing distressed neighborhoods.
Indianapolis Shipping Container Garden
Situated on 30th Street, east of Indianapolis is an inconspicuous plot of land. An ordinary glance reveals a vacant field with just two shipping containers in its midst. Yet hidden within them lies something extraordinary – a fully growing garden!
DeMario Vitalis became the innovator of hydroponic farming within a shipping container in Indiana – an endeavor that involved no soil and instead required controlled levels of water, nutrients and light for the growth of herbs, lettuces, and other seedlings on vertical boards. Urban farming just got a major upgrade with Vitalis. This innovative method of agriculture is able to yield nearly 5 acres worth of food annually from only two 40-foot shipping containers and uses astonishingly 99% less water than traditional farming methods, making this an eco-friendly solution for urban areas all over the world!
Vitalis was a pioneer in utilizing Freight Farms shipping containers to launch his own company. According to Caroline Katsiroubas, the marketing and communications director for Vitalis, he had an added goal of inspiring other Black farmers to join the Freight Farming community- something that has already started happening!
They delivered the containers on time and in good condition. I contacted the delivery team for the approximate time of delivery, and they delivered it earlier than expected which makes me happy. They placed the container on a tight spot and still managed to do it. Thanks for the service.
We needed storage urgently and Onsite Storage provided me with the solution. The name Onsite Storage Solutions fits best with the company. They solved my problem with no hassle. Contacting them is pretty easy too. I will recommend them every day!
We bought 2 containers from them. They have been very helpful from inquiry to delivery. They gave us advice and which containers to take. The also told us the benefits of getting the WWT container. I recommend them if you don’t have much knowledge about containers.
